We offer technical services of water samples collection and chemistry and biology laboratorial tests, but also studies, consultancy and technical support to meet environmental obligations.

Laboratory equipped to perform several types of sampling:

  • Integrating Water Sampler (composite samples) and Van Dorn water samplers;
  • Submersible pumps and bottles for groundwater sampling in piezometers;
  • Refrigerated sampler for effluent composite sampling based on time or flow rate;
  • Dredges and hand-held piston-type samplers for sediment sampling.

 

Sampling in:

  • Reservoirs, lakes, rivers and streams; 
  • Water and wastewater treatment facilities; 
  • Piezometers;
  • Demineralized water production facilities;;
  • Cooling towers;
  • Water distribution systems, boreholes and wells.

Field

We highlight the following tests:

  • Dissolved oxygen/temperature vertical profiles in lakes and reservoir; 
  • Secchi Depth;
  • MIn situ tests – pH, conductivity, alkalinity, carbon dioxide, dissolved oxygen, residual chlorine, temperature, redox potential, salinity and groundwater level;
  • Continuous measurement of pH and conductivity;
  • Continuous measurement of physical/chemical parameters using buoys/parametric probes;
  • Hydromorphological assessmentof rivers - River Habitat Survey (RHS), certified technicians.

 

Laboratory

We perform chemical and biological tests:

  • Classical methods – potentiometry, volumetry, gravimetry, thermometry and conductimetry;
  • Instrumental methods – chromatography, VIS/UV absorption spectrometry, atomic absorption spectrometry and high temperature combustion;
  • Microbiology;
  • Identification, quantification and phytoplankton biovolume;
  • Toxicity tests.

In the Environment 

  • Studies:
    • EWater quality studies and consulting services for reservoirs, lakes and rivers;
    • Studies on water process optimization;
    • Biofouling studies in thermal and hydroelectric plants;
  • Assessment:
    • Trophic state assessment of reservoirs;
    • Environmental flows efficacy assessment;
  • Design of monitoring programs for ecological quality of rivers and water quality of reservoirs;
  • Support to fulfill environmental obligations (e.g. exploration contracts, environmental standards and permits, environmental legislation);
  • Characterization of surface water for industrial use;
  • Assistance on water treatment problems.

The Laboratory’s main activity is the chemical and energetic characterization of coal and ash. The Solid Fuels Laboratory is accredited by the Portuguese Accreditation Institute (IPAC) for 22 coal and ash tests in accordance with the technical accreditation annex LO683-1 that can be consulted here .

The analytical services provided by the laboratory include: 

  • Proximate coal analysis: moisture, volatile matter, ash and fixed carbon;
  • Ultimate coal analysis: sulfur, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, ash and oxygen;
  • Gross and net calorific value;
  • Trace elements in coal: Hg, Se, As, Cd, Pb, Cl, F;
  • Ash elemental analysis: SiO2, Al203, Fe203, MgO, CaO, Na20, K20, TiO2 and P205;
  • Ash fusibility temperature oxidizing and reducing atmosphere;
  • Sieve analysis;
  • Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI).
